Selena Mell (B.A, B.Ed., M.Ed.) comes from Canada and has been involved in the field of Education, in a range of positions from Kindergarten to Adult Education, since 1989. She studied in Canada, France and the USA in French/English Literature, Special Education, and Educational Leadership. After her studies and successful teaching at Canadian immersion schools, she worked as the Head of School in schools in Canada, and in Senior Leadership positions in Chile and Abu Dhabi. Before joining Phorms Education in 2015, she was working for Vanderbilt University and the Ministry of Education in Abu Dhabi (ADEC) as an Instructional Leadership Coach for school leaders.
Selena’s workshops will touch upon best practice identified from research, combined with 25 years of experience in teaching and leading bilingual/immersion programs, chairing school accreditation teams and working with teachers, school leaders, parents and various government agencies in different programs and countries.

Workshop 1: Best Practice in Immersion/ Bilingual Classes
Through linking of research on immersion teaching, this session will outline strategies and activities to enhance teaching in a bilingual/ immersion classroom. The goal is to provide the participant with a list of ideas of best practice which can then be used and integrated into their own classrooms. Participants will also have an opportunity to interact and share ideas based from their own classroom experience.

Workshop 2: Oral Language Development in Bilingual Classes (Interactive)
Oral language provides a foundation for the development of other language skills, and is at the base of Literacy. However, conventional teaching-learning has been one of the obstacles preventing the real development of oral language skills. As research has shown, the development of oral language and vocabulary proficiency is not achieved in the quiet classroom where students passively sit listening to teach talk and then complete workbook exercises. Students need time to practice the skills they are expected to master.
This session will review why a focus on oral language development is important for the second language/ bilingual student, and show the links of oral language to the development of reading and writing skills. As an interactive workshop, we will explore the use of vocabulary games, and Speech Arts activities such as Choral speaking and Readers Theatre.
