For the past 6 years Joanna Wilson has been teaching in an international setting; three years as a Learning Support specialist and 3 years as a classroom teacher. During her time in Learning Support she specialized in math content and teaching students with Dyscalculia. Throughout Joanna’s time teaching she has enjoyed teaching math the most and has found incredible enthusiasm within her students when playing these games and activities.
Workshop by Joanna Wilson
Math: Taking away the fear and adding hands-on learning activities
An initial discussion and lecture will tell about current research and practices that not only help students learn mathematics, but actually create enthusiasm for the subject. Demonstrations and ideas will be given on how to differentiate these games and activities that are easy to no preparation.
After the discussion, teachers will be invited to visit various stations that are set up which will include the activities previously mentioned. One station will also be an area where teachers can share their ideas/activities that have previously worked for them.
At the end of the workshop we will come together once more to discuss the activities and any further practices that were introduced. After the workshop ends everyone who attended will receive an e-mailed document with all the games we played/discussed.
